Citizenship

zur deutschsprachigen Version
to the German version

Austrian citizenship can be acquired by descent, award, extension of the award, etc.

Acquisition by descent means that a conjugal child at birth automatically becomes a citizen if one of the parents is or was an Austrian citizen at that time, or at the time of their death. Illegitimate children automatically acquire citizenship if the mother is an Austrian citizen at the time of birth, without taking into consideration the place of birth of the child, or the citizenship of the illegitimate father.

The process of acquisition by award applies particularly to foreigners who have established themselves in Austria (minimum 10 years legal and nonstop residence, therefrom minimum 5 years with a settlement permit), and now want to completely integrate themselves into the society.

The award of the citizenship to foreigners can also, under certain conditions, be extended to any underage unmarried children.

Please note: More precise information about the above, and further possibilities concerning the acquisition of Austrian citizenship regulated in the citizenship law are available at the citizenship department of the office of the provincial government [Amt der Landesregierung] of your primary residence [Hauptwohnsitz].

Responsible Authority:

The procedure for the award of citizenship is executed by the office of the provincial government [Amt der Landesregierung].
