Registrations Concerning Change of Residence
In Austria, the following utilities related to residence require registration. Please bear in mind that the obligation to register also applies when moving from one residence to another within Austria.
Central Municipal Heating
Before moving out of the old apartment a written notice of cancellation of the heating service must be made and the new address given for the purpose of receiving the final bill.
At the same time an appointment to read the meter must be arranged with the appropriate company or with the heating service itself, so that the heating costs up to the date of moving out can be calculated.
Please note: If you live in Vienna, you can get further information directly from the heating service [Fernwärme Wien].
Gas and Electricity
To cancel the gas and electricity service, consult your energy provider [Energieversorger].
Inform your energy provider of the status of your meter reading on the day you move out, so that the energy costs can be calculated.
Please note: If gas and electricity are available in the new apartment and the service is supplied by the same energy provider, registration for energy services in the new apartment can be made in parallel with the cancellation of services for the former apartment. If no gas and electricity service is available in the new apartment, an appointment must be made for it to be switched on.
When the energy services in the new apartment are switched on, the tenant/owner must be present in person or authorize someone (in writing) to be present on this date. The tenant/owner or his/her designated representative must present an official identification with photo [amtlicher Lichtbildausweis]. Switching on the energy supply is subject to fees.
Please note: If there is no meter, a licensed electrician (for electricity) or plumber (for gas) must make an evaluation for the utilisation of gas and/or electricity services which will be submitted either by him or by the tenant/owner to the energy provider [Energieversorger].
