Birth Certificate [Geburtsurkunde]

zur deutschsprachigen Version
to the German version

The birth certificate, together with the marriage certificate [Heiratsurkunde] and the death certificate comprise the three main personal status documents in Austria.

Such documents are excerpts from the personal status records and show the essential contents of the entries contained in them.

The registries of births, deaths and marriage [Standesamt] keep the personal status records which include the birth, marriage and death records, and register the associated data (with birth, the name of the child, parents etc.).

The birth certificate, in particular, contains the

  • Surname, the first and middle names of the child
  • Time and the place of the birth of the child
  • Sex of the child
  • Surnames, first and middle names of the parents and their residence, as well as their affiliation to a legally recognized church or church society

If the child is adopted, only the foster parents are to be given as parents.

Please note: In some EU countries there is no birth certificate. For certain occasions, such as marriage, an adequate document is needed, nevertheless. Please contact the registries of births, deaths and marriage [Standesamt] for more information.
