Similar term: Residence

A person's principal residence is defined as the residence which can be considered the primary centre of one's daily and usual life activities.

For determining where this residence is located, the following criteria in particular are decisive:

  • Duration of stay
  • Location of the person's place of work or education establishment
  • Relatives' residence (especially the children's residence)

In case these criteria apply to several residences, the residence with which the person has an overriding relationship counts as his/her principal residence.

One can have an unlimited number of (secondary) residences, but only one principal residence.
Information on compulsory registration can be found in the chapter on residence registration/de-registration.
