Short-Term Parking Zones

There is a fee (e.g. in the form of parking tickets) for parking four-wheeled vehicles in short-term parking zones. These fees can not be found in the Straßenverkehrsordnung (StVO), but are regulated by State law.

There are short-term parking zones for certain streets, parts of streets and for whole areas. They are always marked by corresponding traffic signs. In addition, short-term parking zones can be accentuated by blue ground markings, which is not obligatory; the erecting of traffic signs itself fulfils the legal obligation. Short-term parking zones for whole areas can be additionally accentuated by blue transverse markings which bear the word "zone" at every entrance street.

Holders of parking cards in accordance with section 29b of the StraßenverkehrsordnungGerman text are allowed to park cars in which they are the drivers or in which they are passengers for an unlimited period of time in short-term parking zones. In most Austrian federal states, they are not charged any fees.
